Person-Centered Therapy, also known as Client-Centered or Rogerian therapy, is a humanistic approach to psychotherapy developed by the psychologist Carl Rogers. It is characterized by a client-centered and non-directive philosophy, emphasizing the importance of the therapeutic relationship and the inherent capacity for self-growth within individuals. Key principles of Person-Centered Therapy include:

Unconditional Positive Regard: The therapist maintains an accepting and nonjudgmental attitude toward the client, creating an atmosphere of unconditional positive regard. This involves respecting and valuing the client without imposing conditions or expectations.

Empathy: The therapist strives to understand the client's subjective experience and feelings, demonstrating empathy by accurately perceiving and reflecting the client's emotions. This helps the client feel heard and understood.

Genuineness (Congruence): Therapists are encouraged to be genuine and authentic in their interactions with clients. This means being open and honest about their own feelings and reactions, fostering an atmosphere of transparency.

Client as the Expert: Person-Centered Therapy views clients as the experts on their own experiences and believes that individuals have the capacity to find their own solutions to problems. The therapist's role is to facilitate this self-exploration and self-discovery.

Non-Directive Approach: Unlike more directive forms of therapy, Person-Centered Therapy is non-directive. The therapist does not provide solutions or advice but instead facilitates the client's exploration of their thoughts and feelings, allowing them to arrive at their own insights.

Holistic Focus: The therapy addresses the whole person, recognizing the interconnectedness of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It encourages clients to explore their experiences in a holistic manner.

Promotion of Self-Actualization: Person-Centered Therapy is aimed at promoting self-actualization, the process of realizing and fulfilling one's potential. The therapeutic process is seen as a journey toward personal growth and development.

The Therapeutic Relationship: The quality of the therapeutic relationship is considered crucial in Person-Centered Therapy. A trusting and empathetic connection between the client and therapist creates a safe space for self-exploration and growth.

Person-Centered Therapy is applicable to a wide range of issues, including personal growth, relationship difficulties, and various mental health concerns. Its emphasis on the core conditions of empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness creates an environment conducive to self-exploration and positive change

Somatic Experiencing® resolves symptoms of stress, shock, and traumas that accumulate in our bodies. When we are stuck in patterns of fight, flight, or freeze, SE helps us release and recover.
Please watch this demo by Dr. Peter Levine to understand Somatic Experiencing https://allisoncordner.com/therapy-cinema

This is a very important and research-driven way of renegotiating trauma, rewiring the brain and nervous system to return to a state of aliveness, regulation, connection and an embodiment of your true self.

Our team has a specialized focus on Developmental Trauma:

Developmental trauma refers to adverse experiences during critical periods of early development that disrupt the natural, instinctual processes of self-regulation. This disruption can lead to a dysregulation of the nervous system, contributing to symptoms such as hyperarousal, hypoarousal, or a combination of both.

Dr. Peter Levine emphasize the importance of completing the body's instinctual responses that might have been interrupted during traumatic events. Somatic Experiencing involves helping individuals discharge the residual energy from these incomplete responses, allowing the nervous system to return to a state of balance and integration. In SE developmental trauma is not solely focused on specific traumatic events but rather on the cumulative impact of adverse experiences during critical periods of development. These experiences can influence the way individuals regulate their emotions, form relationships, and navigate the world.

(no GST tax is charged as of 2025)
Accelerated Experiential Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) is a contemporary therapeutic approach prioritizing emotional experience and positive affect. Emphasizing in-the-moment processing, it seeks to rapidly transform negative emotions into positive ones. AEDP integrates relational and attachment theories, fostering a secure therapeutic alliance for healing. Through experiential techniques, such as metatherapeutic processing, it accelerates emotional insight, enhances resilience, and promotes personal growth. Unlike traditional psychodynamic therapy, AEDP has a time-limited structure, aiming to efficiently create profound, positive change in clients by tapping into the healing power of emotional connection and transformation within the therapeutic relationship.

* Experiential Focus:
* AEDP places a strong emphasis on the experiential aspect of therapy. It encourages the exploration and processing of emotions in the present moment, aiming for a more direct and transformative experience.
* Positive Affect Emphasis:
* AEDP places a significant emphasis on positive affect and seeks to harness and expand positive emotional experiences. It focuses on moments of joy, connection, and healing within the therapeutic relationship.
* Transformation and Healing:
* AEDP not only aims for insight but also emphasizes the transformation and healing of emotional experiences. The therapist actively works to create a secure and attuned therapeutic relationship that facilitates positive change.
* Relational and Attachment Focus:
* AEDP places a strong emphasis on the therapeutic relationship and views it as a powerful vehicle for change. The therapist actively engages in creating a secure attachment with the client.
* Interventions and Techniques:
* AEDP incorporates a range of experiential techniques, such as metatherapeutic processing, in-the-moment reflections, and attention to non-verbal cues. These techniques aim to deepen emotional experiences and promote healing.
* Time Frame:
* AEDP is often designed as a time-limited therapy, and it may be more structured in its approach, focusing on accelerating the therapeutic process.
*
It's important to note that these distinctions are generalizations, and individual therapists may integrate elements from both approaches based on their training and the unique needs of their clients. Both traditional psychodynamic therapy and AEDP share the overarching goal of promoting psychological well-being through a deep exploration of the self and one's emotional experiences.

Allison Cordner, CEO & lead therapist M.A, MCS, MTC, RCC, SEP, TRA (Quebec licence)

allison.cordner@speakeasycounselling.ca

Hi, I’m Allison Cordner, and I’m so glad you’re here. As a therapist, I believe healing happens in the safety of a trusting, authentic relationship. My work is rooted in the principles of AEDP, which means I aim to be more than just a witness to your journey—I want to be a partner in your healing. Together, we’ll explore the parts of your story that need compassion and attention, uncovering the resilience and strength that’s already inside you.

I am a Certified Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner and a Registered Counselling Supervisor, and I draw from these frameworks to help you navigate the deep connection between your mind, body, and emotions. By working somatically, we can gently explore the patterns and sensations that arise in your body, helping you process and release stress, trauma, and emotional pain at a deeper level. As a supervisor, I also have the privilege of mentoring and supporting other therapists in their professional journeys, something that continuously enriches my own practice. At Speakeasy Counselling & Associates, I work alongside a team of dedicated and skilled therapists who specialize in addressing a wide range of challenges, including trauma, anxiety, grief, relationship issues, and more. Each member of our team brings their unique expertise and compassionate presence to the work we do, ensuring that clients receive care tailored to their individual needs.

As a heterosexual, cisgender female, mother of two teenagers, and the daughter of a Queer parent, I bring a blend of professional expertise and personal experience to my work. I have walked my own healing path through adverse childhood experiences, sexual trauma, domestic abuse, and systemic prejudice based on my mother tongue while being raised in Quebec. These experiences have shaped my understanding of resilience, identity, and belonging, and they allow me to connect with my clients in a deeply empathetic and human way.

I know firsthand how transformative it can be to feel truly seen and supported. When I first stepped into my own therapy years ago, I carried a lot of self-doubt and fear about being vulnerable. But I also discovered how life-changing it is to feel safe enough to let those walls down. That experience taught me that healing isn’t just about fixing what’s “wrong”—it’s about finding new ways to connect with yourself and others, ways that feel alive, true, and free.

In our work together, I strive to create a space where you feel both supported and gently challenged, so you can access your deepest emotions, process past wounds, and step into your most authentic self. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, grief, relationship struggles, or the lingering echoes of trauma, I’m here to help you move toward greater wholeness, connection, and joy.

I often use warmth, curiosity, and humor to help us connect—and yes, I may get a little teary-eyed with you when we touch on something profound. I deeply believe in the power of shared emotion to foster change, and I consider it a privilege to walk with my clients through their most vulnerable and courageous moments.

When I’m not in the therapy room, I find joy in weight training, long quiet walks in nature, reading, learning and collecting cats, lots of them. These small moments of connection—with myself, with loved ones, and with the world—remind me of why I love this work so much.

If you’re ready to take the next step toward healing, I’d be honored to work with you. Let’s explore what’s possible together.
